Instructors’ Exhibition Levels of Spiritual Leadership Behavior According to University Preparatory Class Students

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to adapt Fry’s (2003) “Spiritual Leadership Scale” into Turkish and to determine students’ perceptions of faculty members’ level of spiritual leadership using the adapted scale. The study is designed in descriptive research model. The universe of the study comprises 2600 students studying prep class at Kocaeli University School of Foreign Languages. The sample of the study was selected randomly and includes 800 students. The data was collected using Turkish version of Fry’s (2003) “Spiritual Ledership Scale” which has been translated and adapted by the researchers. After the factor analysis, it was determined that 26 items in the scale were grouped in 6 dimensions. These dimensions were the same as in the original scale. Moreover, it was determined using the scale that the spiritual leadership qualities of faculty members were perceived to be high by the students. According to students, faculty members show spiritual leadership qualities at a high level in “meaning\calling, altruistic love, hope/faith, productivity and membership” dimensions while they remain at moderate level in “vision” dimension.
