The Relationship Between the Levels of Depression and Anxiety in a Group of University Students and Various Variables

Abstract

The relationships between levels of depression and anxiety of university students and various variables are examined in this study The sample consists of 363 students, 363 of whom are females and 1IX whom are males, from various departments of the Faculty of Education (Department Teaching Foreign Languages, Department of Educational Sciences and Department of Fine Arts) at Dokuz. Eylül University, Izmir-Turkey. The data were collected using a "Personal Information Form”, "Beck Depression Inventory” and “Trait Anxiety Inventory” in this particular study. The research has discerned that anxiety levels of females are significantly higher those of males. Significant differences have been found between the anxiety levels of the students in terms of the socio-economic levels of their families, parents’ attitudes, parents’ perceptions of students’ achievement, whether the students’ major fields of study match their choices or not, their satisfaction levels in their fields, and how they benefit from the psychological counseling services. A positive relationship was found between their depression and progressive anxiety levels, and a negative relationship between their progressive anxiety levels and their ages.
